An invertebrate model of the developmental neurotoxicity of insecticides: effects of chlorpyrifos and dieldrin in sea urchin embryos and larvae. The study showed that after a single broadcast use of the pesticide by certified applicators in apartment rooms, chlorpyrifos continued to accumulate on children's toys and hard surfaces 2 weeks after spraying. Based on the findings of this and other research....See more at: http://www.herc.org/library/abstracts/chlorpyr.htm -------------------------- Preliminary Risk Assessment on Chlorpyrifos October 1999 FW: The availability of the Preliminary Risk Assessment for Chlorpyrifos was announced in yesterday's Federal Register. The complete assessment plus industry comments are available on the EPA web site (all 1300 plus pages of it) for review by using Acrobat reader. The site address is: http://www.epa.gov/pesticides/op/chlorpyrifos.htm . This is the most complicated review performed and published to date. The primary summary document is in the section titled health effects and is the "Health Effects Preliminary Assessment" which is 67 pages long. There are 16 appendices to this document including the Incident Review Update which is 26 pages long.By examining the primary document and noting the Margin of Exposures that are low (less than a 100 for occupational or less than 300 for residential exposures) you can determine where the most concern is. Most of the concerns were related to occupational and residential exposures among handlers, not from dietary exposures. ================================================================== Common Name: CHLORPYRIFOS CAS Number: 2921-88-2 DOT Number: NA 2783 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3/2000: There is alot more info on the link. http://entweb.clemson.edu/pesticid/document/leeorg1/leeorg3.htmSymptoms of short-term exposure to low to moderate levels of chlorpyrifos include: dizziness, confusion, salivation, tremors, rapid heart rate, paralysis, loss of consciousness, and muscle weakness which may persist even after the original symptoms have past. The muscle weakness is referred to as organophosphate-induced distal neuropathy (OPIDN) which has been seen in laboratory animals as well as people. Age and sex also play a role in chlorpyrifos toxicity. Children and Infants absorb more chlorpyrifos through their skin than adults do and they cannot get rid of it as fast. Women have also been seen to get rid of chlorpyrifos 2-3 times as slower than do men. This puts women and children at a higher risk. Toxicity is significantly increased when chlorpyrifos is combined with other pesticides. ------------------------------------------------------------------ HAZARD SUMMARY * Chlorpyrifos can affect you when breathed in and by passing through your skin. * Exposure to Chlorpyrifos can cause organophosphate poisoning with headache, sweating, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, loss of coordination, and even death. * Chlorpyrifos may damage the nervous system and liver.IDENTIFICATION Chlorpyrifos is a white crystalline (sugar or sand-like) substance that smells like natural gas. It is a pesticide often sprayed as a water solution. REASON FOR CITATION * Chlorpyrifos is on the Hazardous Substance List because it is cited by ACGIH, NIOSH, DOT, HHAG and EPA. * Definitions are provided on page 5.HOW TO DETERMINE IF YOU ARE BEING EXPOSED The New Jersey Right to Know Act requires most employers to label chemicals in the workplace and requires public employers to provide their employees with information and training concerning chemical hazards and controls. The federal OSHA Hazard Communication Standard, 1910.1200, requires private employers to provide similar training and information to their employees. * Exposure to hazardous substances should be routinely evaluated. This may include collecting personal and area air samples. You can obtain copies of sampling results from your employer. You have a legal right to this information under OSHA 1910.20. * If you think you are experiencing any work-related health problems, see a doctor trained to recognize occupational diseases. Take this Fact Sheet with you. RTK Substance number: 0426 Date: February 1986 Revision: July 1996 -------------------------------------------------------------------------WORKPLACE EXPOSURE LIMITS NIOSH: The recommended airborne exposure limit is 0.2 mg/m 3 averaged over a 10-hour workshift and 0.6 mg/m 3 not to be exceeded during any 15-minute work period. ACGIH: The recommended airborne exposure limit is 0.2 mg/m 3 averaged over an 8-hour workshift. * The above exposure limits are for air levels only. When skin contact also occurs, you may be overexposed, even though air levels are less than the limits listed above. WAYS OF REDUCING EXPOSURE * Where possible, enclose operations and use local exhaust ventilation at the site of chemical release. If local exhaust ventilation or enclosure is not used, respirators should be worn. * If you apply Chlorpyrifos as a pesticide, you will need to use a respirator. (See Respiratory Protection) * Wear protective work clothing.* Wash thoroughly immediately after exposure to Chlorpyrifos and at the end of the workshift. * Post hazard and warning information in the work area. In addition, as part of an ongoing education and training effort, communicate all information on the health and safety hazards of Chlorpyrifos to potentially exposed workers.
