11/2001: From Betty Mekdeci, Birth Defect Research for Children, Inc. Page 25 of the ATSDR Public Health Statement on mercury reports..."There are reliable and accurate ways to measure mercury levels in the body. These tests all involve taking blood, urine or hair samples...and nursing women may have their breast milk tested for mercury levels." http://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/toxprofiles/tp46-c1.pdf ----------------- 7/2000: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE EPA's Methylmercury Guideline Is Scientifically Justifiable For Protecting Most Americans, But Some May Be at Risk WASHINGTON -- While the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's guideline for protecting the public from a toxic form of mercury is justifiable based on the latest scientific evidence, some children of women who consume large amounts of fish and seafood during pregnancy may be at special risk of neurological problems, says a new report from the National Academies' National Research Council. Congress requested that the Research Council provide independent, scientific advice in establishing appropriate exposure limits for methylmercury. Copies of Toxicological Effects of Methylmercury will be available at the end of August from the National Academy Press at the mailing address in the letterhead; tel. (202) 334-3313 or 1-800-624-6242. The cost of the report is $54.00 (prepaid) plus shipping charges of $4.50 for the first copy and $.95 for each additional copy. Reporters may obtain a copy from the Office of News and Public Information at the letterhead address (contacts listed above). Health Care Without Harm revealed recent tests of some of the most commonly eaten
commercial fish products, including canned tuna, frozen shrimp and fish sticks. They
found, for example, that a 4-year-old would receive an unsafe dose of mercury just
by eating one 6-ounce can of chunk light tuna a week, and that a pregnant
woman would expose her fetus to an unsafe dose of mercury by eating a half can of chunk
light tuna per day. ------------ Arbete och Hälsa 1998:02 --- THOMAS W.
