Best wishes and good health ACTIVE - INTERNATIONAL PETITION TO THE WHO Epidemiological EMF studies now! More than 60 cancer clusters near mobile phone base stations and radio/TV transmitters has been found by affected people and civic action groups in Spain, France, UK, Germany, Israel and other countries. I demand the immediate investigation of all these cancer clusters by independent epidemiological studies including all possible causes and including independent measurements of the EMF/microwave/mobile phone radiation levels. I demand the consideration of the precautionary principle for electromagnetic fields and the considerable lowering of the international EMF limits for high frequency fields up to safe limits that protect the health of all in the long term, as well of people near base stations as of users of mobile phones. Sign a "U.S. Declaration of Independence from Hazardous Chemicals" and speak out for better controls on chemicals that could harm people and wildlife around the world, including eagles, whales, seals, and dolphins. We'll deliver the declaration to President Bush right before the Fourth of July Independence Day holiday. He needs to hear from you because his administration is working hand-in-hand with the chemical industry to block progress on a landmark European Union (EU) effort to regulate dangerous chemicals. The EU has released draft legislation that could transform the management of chemicals, increasing protection for wildlife and human health, while providing significant benefits for American consumers as well. Strong European action would raise the global standard and serve as a worldwide model for better control of these dangerous contaminants. BEFORE JUNE 30, SIGN THE DECLARATION BY VISITING: http://takeaction.worldwildlife.org/ctt.asp?u=77812&l=2994 Sadly, existing laws fall far short of protecting people and the environment from the toxic chemicals that are all around us, even in everyday consumer items such as cleaning and hair care products, perfumes, and food cans. Scientists have already found more than 300 man-made chemicals in people. Wildlife around the world are also contaminated, even in remote locations. Both people and wildlife can suffer devastating consequences from these contaminants, including altered neurological and sexual development, impaired reproduction, and weakened immune systems. [emphasis added] Please sign the declaration today and urge your friends and colleagues to sign. We'll also present the signatures to the European Commission to demonstrate the depth of U.S. public support for safer alternatives to hazardous chemicals. A Report from Thailand by Chanpen Choprapawon http://www.google.com/search?q=cache:n9GzQZdAbHwJ:www.kfunigraz.ac.at/fwiwww/aan/newsl1/intelli.html+arsenic+levels+in+children&hl=en&ie=UTF-8 Chronic exposure to even small amounts of arsenic has been linked to cancer. The new study finds arsenic is more widespread and its threat might be increasing because more people are using private wells. "In New England, most arsenic you find is in geologic formations that have been there for a long time," said University of Connecticut microbiologist Robert Vinopal. Some private wells are drilled into those formations, meaning most arsenic is naturally occurring. Years of pesticide use, manufacturing and lumbering might also contribute to arsenic levels. The study focused on eastern New England, which contains the highest population density. Large amounts of groundwater in the region are used for watery supply. Private wells in northeast Connecticut show the highest arsenic levels. Public drinking water is regularly monitored for arsenic levels. Private wells usually are not regulated. Filters can be used to reduce levels. Now, a study by scientists at the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory suggests that when adult male fish are exposed to short-term and low concentrations of a synthetic estrogen, their fertility can drop by as much as 50 percent. http://www.pnl.gov/news/2003/03-20.htm ================================================= CHEMICALS - N ICKEL From OEHHA: 1) Clarification of Chemical Listing of Nickel and Certain Nickel Compounds 2) Request for Comment on Proposed Listing of Nickel Compounds as Known to Cause Cancer http://www.oehha.ca.gov/prop65/whats_new/index.html ================================================= CHEMICALS - TABACCO EU among first to sign Convention on Tobacco Control http://europa.eu.int/rapid/start/cgi/guesten.ksh?p_action.gettxt=gt&doc=IP/03/847|0|RAPID&lg=EN&display ================================================= DISEASE - ASTHMA Chlorine fingered in surge of asthma Agence France-Presse - Thursday, May 29, 2003 - Page A18, PARIS -- Chlorine used to disinfect indoor swimming pools could be one of the causes behind an astonishing surge in childhood asthma in developed countries in the past few decades, a new study indicates. The suspected culprit is trichloramine, a gassy, easily inhalable irritant that is released in a complex process when chlorinated water reacts with urine, sweat or other organic matter brought by swimmers.Trichloramine has previously been pointed to as a trigger for three proteins that destroy the cellular barrier protecting the lungs, making it permeable and more prone to the passage of allergens, the substances that unleash an asthma attack. ,,, http://www.globeandmail.com/servlet/ArticleNews/TPStory/LAC/20030529/UCHLOVV/TPHealth/TODAY'SPAPER ================================================= DISEASE - NEUROPATHY SafetyAlerts, November 15, 2001 Research Study Shows Little-Known Nerve Disease - Neuropathy - Impacting . Janet Newton has resigned as president of The EMR Network in order to form a new
organization called The EMR Policy Institute. The Institute will focus its efforts on
addressing U.S. federal policy for environmental exposures to non-ionizing electromagnetic
radiation (EMR). Such exposures are increasing daily given the buildout of
broadcast, radar, mobile phone and personal wireless technologies. Science, legal,
and environmental advisory boards are currently being formed for the new organization. For additional information, Ms. Newton may be reached at:

MASIPAG, a farmer-led network of peoples organizations, non-government organizations and scientists working for a sustainable agriculture will launch a book that exposes the crimes and lies of Monsanto, a major agrochemical corporation based in St. Louis, Missouri. Monsanto has established operations in more than 60 countries and produces chemical fertilizers and pesticides such as Roundup, Machete, Harness Xtra and seeds such as Cargill, Dekalb, and the genetically engineered Bt-corn known as Yieldgard. MASIPAG, along with RESIST (Resistance and Solidarity against Agrochemical TNCs), a broad alliance of 40 organizations opposing the control of agrochemical transnational corporations in agriculture and PressurePoint, a Seattle based organization dedicated to addressing unchecked corporate power will denounce Monsanto by launching a boycott campaign. Sarah Wright, a PhD candidate from the Washington University and research fellow of MASIPAG, will present the book entitled "Selling FOOD. HEALTH. HOPE. The Real Story Behind Monsanto Corporation," whose information she has gathered from personal interviews and other significant documents. the author. "Monsanto has been selling itself as a clean, green and trustworthy company. Unfortunately their record shows this is not true." "It is important that this information is made available to the people of the Philippines to help them make informed choices," said Ms. Wright, she added. "Monsanto does not care if it destroys our environment, our livelihood, our life. They are only interested in gaining profits by controlling our agriculture." Igmedio Facunla, a farmer from Nueva Ecija and chairperson of the Board of MASIPAG said. "We urge our fellow farmers to stop patronizing Monsantos products such as Cargill, Dekalb and Machete and the Bt-corn variety, Yieldgard. Instead, we should adapt organic farming or other sustainable agricultural practices that are healthier, cheaper, safer to the environment and increasingly more in demand by consumers." Since 1987, MASIPAG has assisted farmers in the development of new rice and corn selections with the use of traditional varieties and developed Facunla further said. sustainable farming practices that produce better yields with minimum pest infestation. The practical work of MASIPAG proves that even without the use of dangerous GMOs, farmers can produce safe, clean and nutritious food in a profitable manner.
