Professor Terje Traavik, head of the department of virology at the University of Tromso in Norway, told the Royal Commission on Genetic Modification that the first generation of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) came from "crude and potentially unsafe [scientific] methods." And he said the third generation of GMOs being produced now were no safer and should not be allowed out of the laboratory. See: --- A coalition of U.S. consumer and enviro groups kicked off a big campaign yesterday to pressure major food companies to abandon the use of genetically modified (GM) crops. Its first targets will be the Campbell Soup Co. and Kellogg's. The activists hope to encourage tens of thousands of consumers to call directly on companies to end the use of GM foods in their products, or at the very least label products that contain GM ingredients. They argue that some companies have begun to eliminate GM ingredients in foods they sell in Europe but refuse to do so in the U.S. The campaign is also aimed at raising public concern before the September release of new Clinton administration rules on genetic engineering, which activists say are likely to be far too weak. The coalition could spend $1 million or more, but that's a drop in the bucket compared to the $50 million that a group of biotech companies have committed to spend over the coming years to tout biotechnology. straight to the source: New York Times, Andrew Pollack, 07.20.00 http://www.nytimes.com/library/national/science/072000sci-gm-food.html read it in Grist Magazine: Why you should worry about GM foods -- by Donella Meadows http://www.gristmagazine.com/grist/citizen/citizen102599.stm do something about it: Genetically Engineered Food Alert http://www.gefoodalert.org/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: Activist Mailing List - http://get.to/activist The movement of environmentalists, consumers, farmers and trade activists against "Frankenfood" is just beginning to gather steam in the US. Seeds of Resistance: Grassroots Activism vs. Biotech Agriculture Julie Light Special to Corporate Watch - May 25, 2000 San Ramon, CA - About a dozen demonstrators dressed in mock biohazard suits dump food products from Safeway supermarket shelves into a plastic bin in front of the Marriott Hotel in this quiet suburban town East of San Francisco. Inside Safeway shareholders are set to vote on a resolution asking the nation's third largest supermarket chain to remove genetically engineered (GE) ingredients from its products. Seed Spin Control The biotech industry knows it has a public relations problem--one that could turn into a disaster. In 1998, before European concern over genetic engineering began to infect the US public, the Biotechnology Industry Organization poured almost four million dollars into lobbying efforts. While more recent figures have not yet been released, it is safe to assume that those figures have escalated along with growing public and congressional concern.... To Label or Not To Label Most opponents of genetically engineered food agree that the goal is to win a moratorium and eventual ban on GMOs. However, there is less consensus on labeling as an interim measure... Where Does Biotech Activism Go From Here?.... ----- You can read the whole article at : http://http://www.corpwatch.org/ ---- June 2000: http://www.centerforfoodsafety.org/--- From P A N U P S - Pesticide Action Network Updates ServiceArea planted with transgenic crops up in 1999 June 29, 2000 The area planted with genetically engineered (GE) crops worldwide jumped to 39.9 million hectares in 1999, an increase of 44%, according to a new brief by the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA). The report, "Global Review of Commercialized Transgenic Crops: 1999," details trends in GE crop use. Today's 39.9 million hectares of GE crops is up more than twenty fold from the 1.7 million hectares planted in 1996. The ISAAA says this adoption rate is the highest for any new technology by agricultural industry standards. Twelve countries grew GE crops in 1999. They are presented in the following table.
