Summary and Full Final Text of Water Framework Directive now online

The website of WWF's European Freshwater Programme now contains a summary of the EU Water Framework Directive and the final official versions of the Directive in English, French German and Spanish. The site also directs users to relevant position papers (e.g. water pricing, "dangerous" substances) and other documents (e.g. history adoption WFD).

The second World Water Forum, which ended last week in The Hague, Netherlands, drew nearly 5,000 participants from all corners of the globe.

By the close of the session, many in the group, from environmentalists to trade unionists, criticized the meeting's ministers for benignly neglecting the magnitude of what activists perceive as a world water crisis.

While the ministers acknowledged concerns and drafted a framework calling for "integrated water resources management," their critics said it is too little too late.

MACHINERY LEAKING TOXICS INTO NEW YORK CITY'S WATER

NEW YORK, New York, July 10, 2000 (ENS) - The EPA is proposing to replace leaking equipment that may be sending toxic contaminants into New York City’s drinking water. Machinery in four gatehouses that regulate the flow of water entering and exiting the city’s West Branch and Kensico Reservoirs is leaking lead, mercury, and PCB contaminated oil. The 50 to 60 year old sluice gate operators use mercury as a sealant, and contain oil that may be contaminated with PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls). Manometers, which measure water flow through the gates, contain mercury, and the actuators that control the flow of water through 48 inch pipes contain mercury and oil. Lead has been detected within the sluice gate operators outside appropriate containment areas...
